[ Summary ] 16.5 percent of the Japanese population is older than 65 years of age. The total numbers and the percentage of people aged 65 and older is expected to rise rapidly. By the year 2015, approximately 25 percent will be older than 65 years of age.
The approach to elderly people requires a perspective different from that needed for medical evaluation of younger people. It is now recognized that the assessment of health related quality of life provides critical information regarding the effects of treatments and patient care, such as complehensive geriatric assessments.
Dying is the final portion of the life cycle for all of us. Providing excellent care to patients near the end of life is an essential part of medical treatment.
