[ Summary ] The role played by renal care units in kidney transplantation, means that the staff of the unit must play a part in registration for renal transplantation and in follow-ups on renal allograft recipients. The candidates and their families have to be informed preliminarily about renal transplantation because a donor may suddenly become available. At the time of registration, the doctor in the renal care unit and the transplant surgeon must assess the candidate as a renal allograft recipient carefully and in practical terms. At present time, the transplant surgeon mainly follows up on the renal allograft recipient. The doctor in the renal care unit (renal physician) should play a greater part in follow-ups. I hope a network for treatment of chronic renal failure will be constructed in connection with the staff of renal care units and transplant surgeons.
