[ Summary ] The main factor for chronic renal failure patients, who have not been introduced to blood purification therapy, is protection of the kidneies, which depends on their functions. Early preparation for selecting the modality of blood purification therapy (or HD or CAPD therapy) is required as well. It is important for the nurse to obtain informed consent from patients, after providing them with sufficient information from the patients' point of view. In order to help these patients choose their own therapy modality, the information should be designed so they can smoothly develop an image of life on HD or CAPD therapy. To be confined to a state of chronic renal failure and face the necessity of blood purification therapy is a great shock to patients, and most of them fall into a state of crisis. At this stage of treatment, assessment and crisis inter vention is an important thing in nursing care.
Therefore, we may conclude that the nurse has an important role in selecting the best mode of blood purification therapy.
