| [ Summary ] | Many hemodialysis patients have insomnia and sleep disturbances. The treatment of insomnia and sleep disturbances plays an important role in their quality of life(QOL), because insomnia influences their physical and mental conditions. We discussed the differential diagnoses and the causes of insomnia, and described special sleep disturbances in relation to the physical causes of insomnia. We summarized the characteristics, adverse effects, and the safe uses of introductive hypnotics. We showed the practical approach for hemodialysis patients with insomnia, and a method to guide patients, including education related to life style. Adequate treatment of insomnia will help relieve hemodialysis patients of one of their major complaints. |
