[ Summary ] The increase in the number of diabetic patients treated with hemodialysis is an important issue in consultation-liaison psychiatric practice. Physical and psychosocial characteristics in these patients are different from those in patients who have renal failure caused by diseases other than diabetes. The psychotherapeutic approaches to mental symptoms in patients with physical diseases are reviewed. With diabetic patients receiving hemodialysis, it is important to make note of various diabetic complications, and low self-esteem, resulting from unsuccessful self-care needed for the treatment of diabetes. It is also important to pay attention to these diabetic complications when giving psychotropic drugs to patients.
