[ Summary ] This paper describes the psychological states of dialysis patients, which were noted through clinical observation and survey results, based on the CMI conducted from 1972 to 1976, i.e. the dawn of dialysis treament in our country. We observed a quite severe mental symptoms in which patients suffered from psychological problems such as a desire to die, aggresive tendencies and anxiety about length of life, or psychotic disorders resulting directly from dialysis.
The paper then presents the survey results of the CMI administered in 1999, showing that patients still have a desire to die and a tendency toward anger to the same extent as in the aforementionded survey. Although in recent years we have witnessed fewer cases of severe psychological conditions associated with dialysis, patients will continue to suffer from those psychological problems as well as uremic psychosis.
The psychiatric problems associated with dialysis patients today are demenntia, are related depression, and mental symptoms caused by prolonged medicaton. It is important to diagnose these cases correctly in order to treat them in an appropriate way.
