[ Summary ] A bone fracture occurs when stress is applied beyond the strength of bone. It is important to understand the biomechanics of bone and stress. In relation to stress, loading modes include tension, compression, shearing, bending, and torsion. The specific loading mode results in the specific fracture pattern. Furthermore, a bone itself has different biomechanical properties, according to the loading direction.
In some pathological cases such as renal osteodystrophy, bone mass and bone structure are impaired, and bones have decreased strength. In these cases,a bone is broken by a degree of stress that would have left a normal bone intact.
