[ Summary ] Abnormalities in the growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor(GH-IGF-I) axis in children with chronic renal failure(CRF) may contribute to growth failure. Recombinant human growth hormone(rHuGH) has been proven to be effective in promoting growth in short stature(CRF) children, both before and after renal transplantation.
Better normalization of growth may be obtained using lower levels of steroids and achieving better graft acceptance.
Cessation of steroids upon initiation of administration of more potent immunosuppressants such as FK506, is also favorable for growth.
Although rHuGH treatment is a promising new approach for CRF children of short stature, its possible negative effects on renal function require close observation.
