[ Summary ] Restriction of dietary protein intake is considered to be one of the most important therapeutic strategies for diabetic nephropathy. Its effect is evident in animal models of diabetes. Various clinical studies have suggested that the restriction of dietary protein intake in subjects with overt diabetic nephropathy may reduce albuminuria and retard the progression of renal failure. However, a prospective multicentered trial of the restriction of dietary protein intake is necessary to prove this hypothesis.
