[ Summary ] Since W.J.Kolff performed the first successful treatment of acute renal failure by using hemodialysis in 1945, hemodialysis therapy has been recognized for its clinical usefulness. During the past fifty years many improvements in hemodialysis have come about through research into basic clinical practices and engineering. Membrane materials and dialyzers have been improved. Substance removal efficacy and biocompatibility have made great strides, however there are many remaining problems, such as the onset of dialysis related amyloidosis, membrane-blood interactions (including complement and leukocyte activation), cytokine production etc. Further improvements in membrane performance are needed to prevent the above complications with hemodialysis therapy.
