[ Summary ] An advance directive is a statement that a mentally competent patient makes about his/or her preferences for life sustaining treatment in the event that he/or she becomes mentally incompetent.
Advance directives can be not only formal written statements (living wills), but also can be oral statements made by the patient or a durable power of attorney for health care.
In this literature, I will explain our recent studies about advance directive in Japan (1-3) and will review some literature about withholding or withdrawing dialysis treatment.
1. The actual feelings of healty Japanese people about advance directives and death with dignity.
2. A survey study of American, German and Japanese nephrologists concerning their attitudes toward advance directives and death with dignity.
3. A survey study of American and Japanese dialysis patients concerning their attitudes toward advance directives and death with dignity.
