[ Summary ] Home hemodialysis (HHD) was developed in the United States, and began in our group, the Social Welfare Corporation "Shinseikai", in 1971. While in home hemodialysis must be conducted with the same degree of safety available at medical facilities, it is may be surprising to learn that extracorporeal circulation treatment, utilizing an artificial kidney may be conducted in the patients' home from the initiation of dialysis treatment. Regarding to safety, treatment has been checked very carefully, from the start of treatment and no serious accidents have occurred. Indispensable in securing this level of operational safety has been a comprehensive educational system and the establishment of a management system, both of which prevent accidents, as well as to providing rapid and appropriate countermeasures, if any problems occur.
There are great expectations for the development of HHD as a device offering the same efficiency available at dialysis facilities, which can be safely and simply operated by patients themselves.
It is hoped that HHD will play a greater role for in the future, those patients who wish to function normally in society, while continuing to undergo dialysis, for thirty years of more. It is hoped that this will increase choice of treatments available for patients with chronic renal insufficiency.
