[ Summary ] In recent years, the development of computer communication systems has had a drastic impact on dialysis treatments. We devised a remote monitoring system, using public telephone lines, for use in dialysis treatment. The remote monitoring system allows the condition of the patient undergoing dialysis, as well as readouts from the dialysis equipment to be monitored in real time, even from thousands of kilometers away. Linkups can be automatically activated from a remote location to notify the control center of the start or the end of a dialysis session, and to transmit various alarms and nurse calls. Such systems will be significantly beneficial in home dialysis treatments and will allow the exchange of patient information between hospitals. The system also incorporates remote maintenance capabilities.
