[ Summary ] During purification therapy, blood is variously influenced by coming in contact with dialysis or filtration membranes. Thus, the dialysis membrane plays the role of a stimulant generating free radicals against leukocytes. The dialysis membrane expresses the leukocyte adhesion molecule. The activated leukocytes are bound to endothelial cells of peripheral vessels, followed by lipid peroxide production. Thus, the generation of free radicals is very detrimental in the dialysis patient. The free radicals apparently cause dialysis complications such as arteriosclerosis, dialysis amyloidosis, and malignant tumors.
