[ Summary ] Acute renal failure (ARF) has more often been accompanied by dysfunction of other organs than occurring by itself as a renal disorder. Therefore, the concept of the criteria for initiating blood purification therapy changes when no improvement is observed after conservative therapy for ARF or complications.
It is natural to consider the change rate or absolute value of BUN, serum creatinine and other blood biochemical findings and clinical conditions when blood purification therapy is planned.
Recently, however, the policy was adopted of starting blood purification if urine volume falls short of the carrier water volume (less than 700 ml/day) which is necessary for the treatment of serious and complicated symptoms. We have also summarized the HUS which are frequently a factor in pediatric ARF as well as the technical aspect of blood purification which is remarkably special.
