[ Summary ] Most of hemodialysis patients have hypertention before or after the induction of hemodialysis. The main cause of death in those patients is cardiovascular disease, such as congestive heart failure or myocardial infarction. It is important to control volume of body fluid and sodium levels in these patients. Therefore, the prunciples of diet therapy must be observed including adequate salt and water intake in order to maintain a proper level of bodily fluids. To continue effective diet therapy, the doctor and the dietitian should teach not only patients but also their families that long-term diet therapy is necessary to prevent changes for the worse in cases of cardiovascular disease.
