[ Summary ] The following three matters were clarified by our study:
I. Influences of hemodialysis on families
II. Necessities of family coping
III. Ideas concerning family coping
Based on these ideas, the essential care of the family as a unit was proposed. First the promotion of self care,emotional support,and advice for the improvement of QOL were recognized to be fundamental to care for families.
To promote family coping in accordance with these fundamentals, the following are necessary:
1) creation of a positive image of hemodialysis
2) promotion of understanding of the disease, hemodialysis treatment and patient care
3) establishment of a method of care under the balanced judgement of the whole family
4) awareness of care experiences
When thinking of care in regard to family relationships, the following are important:
1) promotion of inter-family communication
2) advocacy and mediation of family needs among family members
3) deepening awareness of family relationship
4) promotion of role sharing
In regard to the care and relationship between the family and society, the following are important:
1) promotion of social resource usage
2) advocacy and mediation of patient-family needs to the medical team
