| [ Summary ] | Uremic patients treated with hemodialysis show hypertriglyceridemia, elevated levels of VLDL and IDL and lowered HDL, whereas LDL levels are rarely raised. These changes result from reduced functions of LPL, HTGL and LCAT enzymes, enhanced CEPT-mediated lipid transfer, and decreased LDL receptor activity. Some of these alterations may be accounted for by endocrinological abnormalities including insulin, thyroid hormone, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) imbalances, caused by chronic renal failure. | |
