[ Summary ] CAPD patients have inadequate nutritional intake and about 40% of them show evidence of protein energy malnutrition. CAPD patients lose approximately 3-4g/kg of amino acids and 5-12g/kg of protein into the dialysate each day. For this reason several investigators examined the nutritional benefits of substituting amino acids for glucose in peritoneal dialysis solutions. This solution had an amino acid formulation relatively high in essential amino acids known to be low in CAPD patients. After beginning intraperitoneal amino acid therapy the fasting amino acid pattern became more normal and total protein and albumin concentrations rose.
