[ Summary ] It is known that when using high flux hemodialysis membranes, endotoxins (ET) in the dialysate will pass through the dialysis membrane into the blood compartment. It is very imnportant to measure the actual ET concentration. Samples for ET measurement should be checked immediately after sampling, or stored with a preservative agent, otherwise tested results will show decreased concentraion, rather than the actual concentration.
It is possible to decrese the ET concentration in the dialysate with ET filters in the dialysate line. But the use of filters only, is not adequate to maintain the safety of dialysis treatment. We must pay great attention to decreased ET concentrations without ET filters. Some filters are damaged by rinsing solution, and they leak ET after a few days use. Therefore, it is very important to check the influence of rinsing solution on membranes. Many patients need high quality of hemodialysis treatment, so we must try to improve our methods for dialysate line maintenance.
