| [ Summary ] | With the technological development of hemodialysis, the number of long term hemodialysis patients with various spinal disorders has been increasing rapidly. This paper describes the results and difficulties in surgical treatment of spinal disorders in long term hemodialysis patients. Destructive spondyloarthropathy involves severe spinal instability due to destruction of three joint complexes of the spinal column. As bone is fragile in long term hemodialysis patients, selection of an ideal spinal instrument requires knowledge not only of the pathology of the disease but also of the biomechanics of the spinal instrumentation. Considering the poor general conditions of the patients and difficult postoperative management, cooperation between anesthesiologists and internists as well as orthopedic surgeons is essential for obtaining successful surgical outcomes. | |
