[ Summary ] The use of quality of life (QOL) measurements in assessing treatments of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) was reviewed. A recent cooperative multi-institutional study disclosed that SF-36 is potentially applicable to the estimation of QOL in the healthy Japanese population and in ESRD patients. ESRD patients showed decreased QOL except in terms of body pain. The vital activity scores correlated with the hematocrit levels of ESRD patients.
Many clinical studies have attempted to clarify the difference in therapies for ESRD which include QOL measures as a secondary end-point for patients' subjective estimations of these therapies. QOL measures allow more comprehensive estimation of ESRD therapies.
