[ Summary ] Psychometric properties required for HRQOL are discussed and standard statistical methods for evaluating these properties are reviewed. For evaluating psychometric properties (feasibility, responsiveness, reliability and validity),an appropriate research design and utilization of statistical methods including multivariate analysis are required. The final objective of measuring HRQOL is the accumulation of relevant information for medical technology assessment and individualization of therapy. Although the significance of HRQOL is now becoming widely recognized in the Japanese medical community, there remain unsolved methodological problems both in measuring HRQOL and in the statistical analysis of data.
