[ Summary ] In France, there were 30,676 patients with end stage renal failure (ESRF) in 1993, for half the total ESRF functional population of Japan. Among them 12,583 patients have renal transplants. Self-dialysis and home-dialysis have been recommended for the purpose of decreasing the costs and promoting the self-sufficiency of dialysis patients.
Dialysis in a center, with doctors and nurses, is more expensive than self-dialysis or home-dialysis. Clinical methods of dialysis are not so different from those used in Japan, though some differences are noteworthy.
For example, protease-inhibitors are not used as anti-coagulants during dialysis. Reuse of membranes is officially forbidden, but is occasionally done. Follow-up of virus infections is very strict and vigilant.
