[ Summary ] There were 8,703 patients in Australia and 1,633 patients in New Zealand receiving renal replacement therapy, including functioning renal transplants (48.4% and 47.9%, respectively), as of the end of 1995. In Australia, 66.4% of dialysis patients are on hemodialysis (13.8% are on home hemodialysis) and 31.5% are on CAPD. In New Zealand, 38.2% of dialysis patients are on hemodialysis (20% are on home hemodialysis) and 58.9% are on CAPD. ESRD patients increase annually, and, diabetes as the primary renal disease has risen to 20% in Australia and to 37% in New Zealand. Both countries have much higher renal transplant activity (mainly cadaveric transplantation) than Japan.
