[ Summary ] Up to the first half of the 1960's, patients suffering from chronic renal failure in Japan were in a tragic state in that they died of uremia. In 1966, the first hemodialysis treatment was attempted for four patients with chronic renal failure, and this treatment advanced remarkably over the following decare. The author analyzed the nursing situation surrounding diaysis treatment from the 1960's through the 1970's based on the experience of home-hemodialysis nursing. As a result, it became clear that medical treatment and nursing in hemodialysis have progressed over time. In the process, several conditions have been produced which appear to influence other medical treatments and nursing, and even society as a whole: They are 1) the establishment of team treatment which is always patient-centered ; 2) realization of home medical treatments, or home hemodialysis ; 3) reconsideration of assistant jobs for medical examinations; 4) improvement of assistance for patients with chronic disease, including assistance with self-care, independence and the application of communication and counseling techniques ; 5) more emphasis on assistance from the overall human standpoint ; and 6) moving ahead with informed-consent and improvement of the quality of life for patients.
