[ Summary ] Plain chest X-Ps are one of the most routine examinations performed on chronic dialysis patients. Shadows appearing on plain chest X-Ps are quite complicated and involve many pathological conditions such as inflammation (infection), ectopic calcification and benign or malignant tumors.
This is the reason for being very careful in diagnosing abnormal shadows seen on X-Ps. For further strict evaluation, chest CT/MRI or bronchoscopy with biopsy and so on are mandatory. Statistical reports have revealed a higher incidence of lung cancer in chronic dialysis patients than in those who have normal renal function.
It should be emphasized that dialysis doctors who are in contact with dialysis patients two-three times a week must pay careful attention to this field of dialysis therapy.
Therapeutic results, with antitumor agents, surgery or radiation therapy have been improving but are still quite unsatisfactory. Further studies are necessary for obtaining a better prognosis.
