[ Summary ] Recently, special foods have been developed and utilized in clinical dietary therapy. Medium chain triglyceride (MCT) is one of these special foods that augment energy provision. MCT is composed of saturated fatty acids made of 6 to 12 carbohydrates. MCT is composed of octanoic acid (C8:0) and decanoic acid (C10:0) according to their physiological actions. There are characteristic differences in digestion, absorption and metabolism between MCT and long chain triglyceride (LCT). MCT is useful for dietary therapy with renal disease as a suppliemental energy source. MCT food takes advantage of high- energy, good digestion and absorption. Furthermore, there is little protein and no water, sodium or potassium in MCT food. Therefore, MCT food is suited to endstage renal failure patients with dietary restrictions to these constituents, MAKUTONĀ® is one of such MCT foods.
