[ Summary ] Diet therapy is an essential strategy for the prevention of various complications related to renal failure as well as for preserving residual renal function. The principle of diet therapy for patients suffering from chronic renal failure is a low-protein and high-calorie diet. However, it should be easy to continue and be palatable for patients in order to assure long-term success. Specially developed foods have a prime role in low-protein diets and long-term success is unlikely without these special foods. In this context, we describe the purpose and the clinical significance of diet therapy utilizing various foods.
