[ Summary ] It is well known that hypertension degrades residual renal function in chronic renal failure (CRF), and causes atherosclerosis and cardio-vascular diseases in both CRF and hemodialyzed patients. Therefore, the management of hypertension in CRF and hemodialyzed patients is very important. All types of antihypertensive drugs can be used, but we must be aware of their pharmacokinetics and side effects.
A hypotensive episode in a hemodialysis patient, often requires aggressive resuscitative measures, premature termination of hemodialysis, and sometimes causes severe cardio-vascular disorders. To prevent hypotensive episodes, it is essential to set the adequate so-called dry weight for an individual patient.
