[ Summary ] It is highly important that colonoscopy be performed without any complications. However, there have actually been some complications in colonoscopic cases. X ray fluoroscopy has been used as a supporting technique for colonoscopy, however, there have been some problems with x ray related injuries. An endoscope position detection unit (UPD), using magnetic fields and a scope was able to gather information in real time. The merits of this equipment are as follows: (1) The shape of the scope can be observed at all times, and there can be safe insertion as well as it being useful for assisting with colonoscopic examinations. (2) The positive results from colonoscopic training are quite high. (3) The location of detected lesions is. (4) It is useful for the supervision of trainees. On the other hand, the negative points were as follows: (1) Examination room space was reduced due to this equipment. (2) Examination time was longer because of observation of monitor. (3) UPD Contraindication associated with pacemakers. It was concluded that UPD is useful for colonoscopy and colonoscopy may be performed more safely with it.
