[ Summary ] The magnifying colonoscope enables us to make a detailed examination of pit patterns in the colorectal mucosa. The current applications for this magnifying scope for use in pit pattern diagnosis are: 1) differential diagnosis of non-neoplastic lesions, adenoma and cancer of the colorectum, 2) evaluation of the depth of invasion of early cancer, 3) evaluation of the presence of remnant neoplastic tissue after endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). Olympus' latest magnifying colonoscope, model CF-Q240ZI, has 100x optical magnification compared to the previous model, the CF-200Z, which is adequate for pit pattern examination. In addition, the Q240ZI has better focusing ability and a wider view compared to the CF-200Z. The Q240ZI has improved maneuverability which is equal to that of the standard CF-Q240I. Further improvements in magnifying scopes may increase their maneuverability, making them widely accepted as the standard for colonoscopic examinations.
