[ Summary ] The recent development of multi-detector row CT (MDCT) and high performance workstations for three-dimensional imaging have made it possible to detect small and superficial types of colorectal cancer in early stage. This technique has many advantages over optical endoscopy, such as short examination time, post process analysis, exanmination in the case of severe stricture, multiangle view observation, information on other organs and vessels, as well as diagnosis of metastasis.
Endorectal MR imaging can visualize the normal laminar architecture of the colorectal wall, having five or six different layers on a T2-weighted image. Our results suggest that with this method we are able to diagnose intramural tumor invasion, and observe small extramural tumor extensions in the rectum. This information can help to determine the choice of surgical procedure.
