[ Summary ] The most hazardous complication from colonoscopy is perforation. This complication occurs subsequent to strains in the intestinal wall. Therefore, we must know that no undue strain should be put on the intestinal wall during endoscopy. For this reason, it is important for endoscopists to learn colonoscopic manipulation techniques and to observe the basic rules of insertion. It is also important to know the characteristics of various types of endoscopes, including colonoscopes, with variable stiffness, and then to select the most suitable colonoscope.
