[ Summary ] Recently, the number of colorectal cancers has increased, due to changes in foods and life style in Japan. The imunological fecal occult blood test (IFOBT) is very useful for detecting colorectal cancers as mass screening, but a few problems have been noted.
To elucidate the problems with IFOBT, we studied 1,689 IFOBT-positive colorectal neo plasms (268 cancers, 1,421 adenomas). For control, 1,612 colorectal neoplasms for screening, except IFOBT-positive cases, were enrolled (124 cancers, 1,488 adenomas).
The results showed that IFOBT-positive early colorectal neoplasms tend to be larger and macroscopically protruding. Pit patterns of early colorectal neoplasms showed mostly IIIL and IV.
Especially concerning early colorectal cancers, the frequency of type IV and V pit patterns was high. We must pay attention to the fact that IFOBT is limited to flat and depressed colorectal neo plasms.
