[ Summary ] Surgeons in Western countries extended the indication of laparoscopic surgery to colorectal field in the early 1990s. The laparoscopic colorectal surgery has been shown to be technically feasible and it is now performed in many hospitals for variety of benign conditions. Many papers have shown consistent benefits, principally related to evidence of faster postoperative recovery. It is going acceptance and popularity based on the merits of the procedure in patient benefits. But a common indication for colectomy is cancer. To date, the role of laparoscopic surgery in the management of malignant conditions has not been clarified and cannot recommended as routine practice the relative risks and benefits are carefully assessed. In this chapter we described the past and current papers, and prospective randomized trials currently underway in Western countries.
