[ Summary ] In our department, one hundred and four laparoscopic resections for colorectal cancer have been performed since 1998. Accurate dissections of advanced colon cancers have been possible. There has been no port site recurrence, or others responsible to laparoscopic surgery. Compared with the open resection group, patients in the laparoscopic group had lower analgesic requirements, were able to ambulate without assistance earlier, passed flatus earlier, and left the hospital sooner. The mean period from hospital discharge to starting work or sport was significantly shorter in the laparoscopic group than in the open resection group (13 days vs. 31 days ; p<0.0001). Ten patients had minor complications in the laparoscopic group. There were cases of wound infections, atelectasis, ileus etc. The risks of laparoscopic colorectal resection are acceptably low. Laparoscopic resection for colorectal cancer is acceptable for minimally invasive surgery and is preferable to open resection in terms of comfort and recovery.
