[ Summary ] Currently, conventional xenon lamps and semiconductor lasers are two major light sources for endoscopic systems used in Japan. Narrow-band imaging, which is characterized by the narrowed bandwidth of spectral transmittance through optical filtering of xenon light, and blue laser imaging/linked color imaging, produced by optimizing the emission intensity ratio of two types of laser light, are widely accepted for image enhanced endoscopy (IEE) in the diagnosis of colorectal lesions. Notably, JNET classification based on magnifying endoscopy with IEE and EC classification based on endocytoscopy are essential for accurate qualitative and quantitative diagnoses. Although these IEEs originated from different light sources they do not differ significantly in diagnostic performance; however, they differ in the appearance of fine endoscopic images. Furthermore, in June 2020, an endoscope system with an LED light source was introduced. New findings concerning LED endoscopy are expected in the near future.
