[ Summary ] A preferred basic technique for colonoscope insertion involves introduction of a colonoscope into the cecum using a technique commonly referred to as "shortening the colonic fold through bending". However, some degree of colon pushing and looping is unavoidable in technically challenging cases. Currently, many types of magnifying colonoscopes are available for use, and these instruments are classified into hard and thick and soft and thin types. A hard and thick colonoscope is suitable for patients with obesity and the soft and thin type is useful in thin women and in patients with severe adhesions. Clinicians should be familiar with the features of the different colonoscopes available in clinical practice and choose the appropriate device to ensure a safe and painless procedure in each patient.
