[ Summary ] Evidence regarding the benefits of antispasmodics, analgesics, and sedatives in colonoscopy is limited. However, when using these drugs, informed consent should be obtained and precautions must be taken to avoid risks. Many analgesic- and sedativerelated adverse events often occur in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, it is possible to reduce the risks by reducing the frequency and dose of analgesics and sedatives by painless insertion of the colonoscope and collection of sufficient information. Antispasmodics play an important role in painless colonoscopy. Many antispasmodic-related adverse events often occur in a dose-independent manner; therefore, it is necessary to collect information about the potential risks of antispasmodic use in advance and have knowledge regarding the management of such events. In addition, it is desirable that antispasmodics should be used in an appropriate manner to maximize the benefits.
