| [ Summary ] | The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is a simple, noninvasive test for colorectal cancer screening that reduces mortality from colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the sensitivity of the FIT is low, and some CRCs that require removal are overlooked. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and characteristics of CRCs in FIT-negative patients who underwent colonoscopy (CS). From January 2007 to December 2009, we performed 1-day FIT before endoscopy for 1592 examinees who consented to undergo colonoscopy in our hospital. We compared the endoscopic findings of the FIT-negative and FIT-positive CRCs and calculated the fatality rate in each group. The FIT-negative CRCs were smaller and had a higher proportion of intramucosal cancers than the FIT-positive CRCs. On the other hand, the FIT-negative T1 and deeper CRCs had a poor prognosis, which suggests the importance of colonoscopy in CRC screening. | |
