[ Summary ] Technological advances leading to the introduction of capsule endoscope for small intestine (SBCE) and balloon-assisted enteroscopy (BAE) have significantly improved the diagnosis and treatment of small intestinal disease. Moreover, the development of the patency capsule has expanded the indications for SBCE for the management of small intestinal disease. The most common cause of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) in Japan is ulcers/erosions (34-53 %), followed by vascular disease (23-34 %).We have reported nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug induced enteropathy, Crohn's disease, intestinal Behçet's disease and simple ulcers, as well as intestinal enteric tuberculosis, which were frequently caused as ulcers and erosions. We have also described chronic enteropathy associated with the SLCOA1 gene. Furthermore, we have described indications for SBCE and BAE with respect to each disease.
