[ Summary ] Laparoscopic surgery for early rectal cancer is reportedly associated with favorable outcomes in terms of early postoperative recovery and minimal bleeding. Therefore, the use of this surgical procedure is increasing annually. However, detailed understanding of the anatomy and surgical technique, as well as clear visualization of the operative fields is essential for safe and function-preserving surgery. Additionally, dissection, rectal resection and anastomosis within the confines of the restricted pelvic field requires high surgical skills ; therefore, standardized procedures are needed to perform safe laparoscopic surgery. We describe the step-by-step procedure for a laparoscopic low-anterior resection standardized in our institution.
