[ Summary ] The wide range of differential diagnoses for childhood-onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) makes its diagnosis complicated. IBD in this age group may not exhibit typical phenotypes which can be classified as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. They have been considered to be a heterogenic group of disorders. Recently, advances in genomewide association studies have revealed "Monogenic IBD", a rare genetic disorder which can cause IBD. It is very important to properly diagnose IBD for adequate treatment and management. In this article, we discuss diagnostic approaches to different forms of childhood-onset IBD, including Monogenic IBD.
