[ Summary ] |
It has been established that total colonoscopies (TCS) can reduce colorectal cancer mortality based on the results of several case-control/cohort studies. However, some authors have reported that the effects are less notable in the proximal colon than in the distal colon. Recently, interval cancer/post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer has attracted attention as an important cause of this condition. We assess the incidence and characteristics of lesions detected by TCS one-year after declaration of a "clean colon" based on the results of the Japan Polyp Study (JPS). As a result, it is suggested that overlooking nonpolypoid lesions, primarily LST-NG, in the proximal colon and small polypoid lesions in the distal colon may be the greatest causes of interval cancers. |
