[ Summary ] The prevalence of ulcerative colitis (UC) has increased in Japan in recent times. It is expected we will frequently encounter UC in daily medical practice. Although colonoscopy plays an important role in diagnosis, sometimes it is difficult to diagnose this disease. Careful diagnosis is required to avoid misdirected treatment. It is necessary it be diagnosed comprehensively through clinical histories, blood tests, fecal cultures and colonoscopy. We must be familiar with typical endoscopic findings for UC as well as other diseases.
