[ Summary ] Advances in the spatial resolution of ultrasonic imaging devices have enabled evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract from outside the body. Transabdominal ultrasonography (US) has the advantages of being a low-cost, non-invasive, easy-to-perform procedure that does not require any prior preparation. US is useful for monitoring flare-ups and disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease. In ulcerative colitis (US), US can be used to monitor disease flare-up by measuring bowel wall thickness, and to assess disease severity by evaluating bowel wall stratification and blood flow pattern. A high correlation has been found between US and colonoscopy findings. Thus, US helps to monitor disease activity in a non-invasive manner.
