[ Summary ] |
5-Aminosalicylates (5-ASA) and steroids have key roles in the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). Several types of drug delivery systems are currently available for 5-ASA, such as time-dependent release and pH-dependent release. They are used according to the extent of the disease. Although all types of 5-ASA can be used for both induction and maintenance therapy, allergic responses to mesalazine are a concern. On the other hand, steroids are the first choice for treating moderate and severe UC;however, they should not be used for maintenance therapy. When one begins to administer steroids, one should have a plan regarding how and when to stop. Major side effects of steroids, such as osteoporosis, diabetes, and infections, should be noted. |
