[ Summary ] Many diseases present with multiple elevated lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. In addition to genetic polyposis, these include inflammatory bowel disease, lymphoproliferative disorders, infectious enteritis, and pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Endoscopic differentiation of these diseases requires careful observation of not only the properties, color, and shape of the elevated surfaces, but also the distribution of lesions and whether there is inflammation in the surrounding mucosa. Additionally, it is difficult to diagnose all of these diseases on endoscopic findings alone ; preferably, efforts should also be made to determine the diagnosis to the extent possible with reference to histological examination of biopsy specimens, other imaging findings as needed, serological tests, and bacteriological exams. Full, detailed follow-up should be done for cases in which diagnosis is difficult.
