[ Summary ] We reviewed the histological findings and histological diagnosis of cytomegalovirus (CMV) enterocolitis. CMV infection is an opportunistic infection of the gastrointestinal tract. CMV infection has been known as a refractory factor of UC. CMV infection is diagnosed using serological, histological, and nucleic acid tests. It is most commonly diagnosed by histopathological analysis for the detection of CMV antigen in the blood and CMV-infected cells. Histologically, CMV-infected endothelial cells are seen in the granulation tissue at the ulcer base. Diagnosis of CMV infection is difficult with only hematoxylin and eosin staining ; therefore, a combination of methods would be needed for definite diagnosis. The future aging proceeds, it is expected that long-term followed immunocompromised patients and IBD patients is increased due to medical developments. For these patients, it is necessary to keep in mind the CMV infection.
